Project title: Réglementation de l’accès au statut de réfugié au Canada: impact sur l’intégration au marché du travail et contexte global

My project explores the impact of the regulation of access to refugee status in Canada on refugees‘ labour market integration from the development of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act until 2008 in a context of increasing globalization and regulatory complexity. Adopting a neo-institutionalist design, my study aims to contribute to research on the impact of migratory flows on the transformation of the labour market. At the empirical level, I combine a policy analysis contributing to the IMPALA database on the development of migration policies in OECD countries with interviews with refugees employed in the Montreal region.

Marta Otto holds a PhD degree from the Department of Law of the European University Institute (Florence, Italy), where under the supervision of Marie-Ange Moreau she prepared a thesis: The Right to Privacy in Employment: In Search of Contemporary Paradigm through Comparative Studies, centered around distinguishing the conceptual and normative foundations of contemporary employment-specific paradigm of the right to privacy, as well as the pillars of a holistic approach to the protection of employees’ right to privacy.

She is a former scholar of the International Society for Labour Law and Social Security Law (2008) and COMPTRASEC (Centre de droit comparé du travail et de la sécurité sociale 2009).

Fellow's name: Supriya Routh (Université Laval)

Supriya Routh completed his PhD in Law & Society from the Faculty of Law, University of Victoria, Canada in 2013. He is presently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Interuniversity Research Centre on Globalization and Work (CRIMT) – Université Laval, under the supervision of Prof. Martin Dumas and Prof. Dominic Roux. His interest areas are labour law, informal and atypical economic activities and workers, human rights, and law and development.

Supervisor: Martin Dumas, Dominic Roux

Project title: Conceptualizing Law and Organization: Informal Workers in Global South

Supriya Routh is interested in exploring the role of human rights in labour law so far as interests of informal workers in the global South are concerned. In furtherance of that overall research agenda, as a CRIMT fellow, he will be engaged with two substantive issues during his fellowship tenure. First, from a theoretical perspective, he will be conceptualizing an idea of work law, which is attentive to the challenges posed by the employment relationship-based idea of labour law. By envisaging an idea of work law, he hopes to integrate the diverse categories of work and workers within a single conceptual legislative framework. Second, in furtherance of a participant-centered lawmaking process, Routh will develop a framework through which disorganized informal workers in global South could develop their own organizations, which need not necessarily be trade union(s). Informal workers are barely represented through trade unions; even when they are, the dwindling power of trade unions makes it difficult for informal workers to exert any pressure on the law-making process. Routh’s research on the organization of informal workers is contextualized in this backdrop.
