Welcome!

On September 23rd and 24th 2010, a conference entitled Union Action without Borders was held at HEC Montreal. Organized by the Interuniversity Research Centre on Globalization and Work (CRIMT) in collaboration with the CISO, CSQ, CSN and FTQ, this conference sought to assess various solidary initiatives undertaken by labour unions at the local, national and international levels. CRIMT wishes to acknowledge the financial support of the Major Collaborative Research Initiatives program of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and of the Fonds québécois de recherche sur la société et la culture (FQRSC) in the organization of this important research outreach activity.

Since the inception of the first cooperation and humanitarian programs, unions' international initiatives have evolved greatly. Many international union networks now exist and new tools have been created, notably international framework agreements, shareholder engagement, and ethical purchasing policies. While engendering great hope, these initiatives also raise many questions: How to enhance workers’ awareness with respect to international trade unionism? What tools and resources are available to unions and can they be activated? How to promote dialogue between North and South? How can such initiatives improve the working conditions here in Canada and abroad?

These are just some of the questions that the 50 guest speakers and labour leaders who participated in this conference sought to answer by sharing their experiences of international solidarity. This site hosts all of the presentations delivered at the conference, that is over 15 hours of video content. Presentations are grouped by plenaries and workshops.
